Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the SURJ Style Guide, which can be found here:


  • The Author has gained support from an academic member of staff in their department/school prior to submitting their manuscript. This academic member of staff has signed the 'Academic Support Form' which the Author is attaching to their submission (there will be an option to 'upload supplementary files' later on). The form is available here:


Author Guidelines


Types of Submissions:

SURJ welcomes a variety of article submissions including:

  • Original research articles;
  • Review papers (including book/article/conference reviews etc.);
  • Adaptations of coursework essays, dissertations, dissertation research proposals and chapters, reports, literature reviews etc.


Word Count:

All articles should be 2,000 - 5,000 words (excluding references and appendices).


Guidance on Writing for SURJ:

The document ‘Writing for SURJ’ offers advice on structuring your manuscript, the content in manuscripts and relevant sections that need to be included. Please use this in conjunction with the SURJ Style Guide.

Style Guide:

The SURJ Style Guide provides information on the formatting standards of manuscripts that authors will need to adhere to, e.g. the presentation of tables, diagrams, images, referencing etc. The Guide can be found here:



Academic Support Form:

All contributors are asked to find a member of academic staff from their department/school who would be happy to support their submission and sign the Academic Support Form available here:


A scanned copy of the form needs to be submitted together with the manuscript.
